It’s pure Sundance gold from the Aussie filmmaker Jason van Genderen who won first prize at Sundance London Film and Music Festival (Nokia Music category) with one of the most amazing short films ever shot on a smartphone.  

Terrigal based pocket filmmaker’s winning film ‘RED EARTH HIP HOP’ was shot entirely on a Nokia Lumia 920 smartphone. Featuring stunning images from remote far north Queensland, audiences have been mesmerised with its beauty and amazed it was filmed on a mobile.

Van Genderen’s film explores how hip hop, a music culture seeded in the Bronx, has reached indigenous communities in regional/remote Australia and is helping indigenous youth reconnect with language, elders and story time through this new form of music.

“Filming on a smartphone is such an unobtrusive way to capture a story. People find they open up a lot more in a documentary sense, talking to a device that they are used to seeing everyday as opposed to a big film crew and everyone starting to clam up and being more guarded with their story,” said Jason.

“The technology in the Nokia Lumia 920 is stunning, such incredibly sharp pictures from such a tiny lens. It really was remarkable to see the picture on the cinema screen. For most audiences, they’d have no idea it came from a smartphone.”

Jason was one of two filmmakers selected after a global search by Sundance London for filmmakers to pitch a 60 second trailer on a local underground music story.

Sydney, Australia – 26 March 2013. Nokia today launches Nokia Music+, a new subscription-based music service for Lumia users for AUD$4.99 per month.

Nokia Music+ builds on the existing Nokia Music Mix Radio service allowing users to access a wide number of playlists curated by an expert team of musos and international artists.   Nokia Music+ also introduces features like infinite skips.

Other features of Nokia Music+ include:

• the ability to download unlimited mixes for offline playback
• the option to select higher quality audio when connecting via Wi-Fi or through your network
• access to lyrics for those impromptu karaoke sessions
• the ability to listen and enjoy via Internet-enabled devices including PC or tablet

Nokia Lumia users can upgrade to Nokia Music+ from their handset by selecting ‘Nokia Music’ from the main file menu, click on ‘Settings’ and there will be an option to ‘Upgrade’. KONE Australia’s new phone policy, which is part of a hybrid Bring Your Own Device (BYOD) and Choose Your Own Device (CYOD) model being rolled out across the business, permits employees to choose their own smartphone from a number of manufacturers including Nokia, Samsung, HTC and Apple.

Staff can either use their private device at work or choose from a range of selected smartphones, with the majority opting for Nokia Lumia as the best handset to meet their work needs.

KONE Australia’s strategic sourcing manager, Colleen Upsall, said: “As part of the refresh, we were looking for a range of smartphones that catered to all levels of the business, from maintenance and installation to senior managers and directors.

Sydney, Australia – 25 October 2012. Food manufacturing company Kitchens of Sara Lee has announced the upgrade of its smartphone fleet to the Nokia Lumia 800 with Windows Phone.

Sara Lee chose Nokia Lumia over Blackberry, iPhone and other handsets running the Android operating system.

Sara Lee’s IT program manager Michael Holt, said, “Nokia’s reputation for building quality, feature-rich devices, as well as its proven track record in the field were key factors in our decision to deploy Lumia.

“We considered alternatives such as iPhone and Samsung, however, Nokia Lumia was a clear winner.  The Windows Phone platform offers a stronger enterprise solution, which provides better back and front office integration for the Sara Lee business.”

To date, more than 70 handsets on the Optus network have been deployed to staff ranging from operational workers on the factory floor and admin staff through to the sales teams on the road and executives in the boardroom, with more expected in the future.

“One major advantage with Nokia Lumia is that more staff can access Microsoft’s Lync Enterprise Voice, which has resulted in an increase in communication, collaboration and productivity across all levels of the business.  We have effectively been able to utilise our own enterprise telephony solution directly from the mobile device,” Michael said.

According to Michael, integration with familiar business tools such as Outlook, Internet Explorer, Word, Excel and PowerPoint is seamless, while access to Nokia services such as Nokia Drive providing free, voice-activated turn-by-turn navigation has also been a key benefit for the sales team, transforming the way they work.

“The native Microsoft Office integration is a real bonus.  Staff are now able to access and edit documents on the fly and exchange sales collateral with customers,” Michael said.

Another advantage for Sara Lee is the ability to control the devices centrally.  “Our Mobile Device Management (MDM) tool, developed by Airloom, is called Silverback and was recommended to us by our technology partners Microsoft and Optus. The tool provides us with enterprise-wide control over the mobile device fleet, and also allows us to publish corporate approved mobile applications to our users,” Michael said.

Before making the switch, Sara Lee had question marks around whether the new user interface might be hard for staff to get used to, but their experience has been the opposite.  “The Nokia Lumia is so intuitive and easy-to-use.  Feedback about the live tiles has been particularly positive, staff can get the most fundamental tasks done much more quickly and there is more information available on the home screen compared to the static Android or iOS set up,” Michael said.

“Microsoft and Nokia have also provided us with excellent direct support, including hands on training sessions by Nokia at our two major sites in Gordon and Lisarow, which was very well received by staff.  This support has made the transition from a less sophisticated fleet of handsets much smoother.”

Sara Lee says there is scope to increase the user base of Nokia Lumia within the business, with plans to move to the upcoming Windows Phone 8 platform and deploy additional handsets in the future.

“We believe the Nokia and Microsoft partnership provides a leading mobile solution from both an operating system and hardware view point.  With the upcoming Windows Phone 8 release, we’re expecting to see further innovations that will enhance collaboration and productivity in the business,” Michael concluded.
